Good deal!

I ended up buying this at a local sports store and like the previous two reviewers was a bit wary to buy it because there were no reviews. I ended up finally buying it because of the reputation that Schwinn has with its other ellipticals and was not disappointed.

I had no difficulty putting it together by myself but it would be best to have two people. Thank you reviewer Toasty for informing me that the water bottle holder is not included. I’ll stop searching my house for the damn thing now. I thought I lost it. The bolts, screws, and washers come on two cardboard sheets along with two wrenches and a hex/screw driver. You will have the screws left over for the water bottle holder. The programming was pretty straight forward until I got to the custom program level. I’m still not sure how I got past that screen.

The elliptical itself feels sturdy and well built. I am 300 pounds and it supports my weight without shaking or wobbling. The 18″ stride and the handles feel comfortable for my 5’10″ frame. I heard some complaints from the salesmen at the sports store that the handles were to far forward but I did not have that problem. The console is pretty basic but what was expected for the price.

Bottom line is if you are looking for a sub $600 elliptical that is well built, this is the one for you.

So quiet, I can hear my bike chain rolling louder than the trainer. The best way to get nowhere fast!

It’s silent except for the sound of your tire rolling over it, and completely stable. There’s really no need to buy the next more expensive one. I haven’t felt the need for a mat. And the resistance truly is road like except without the bumps and traffic lights. It’s a constant effort though, so you will get more of a work out in 45 minutes on the trainer than you would in double that time riding on the road.

You will want to accessorize however for a few reasons:

First of all, riding a trainer is the most boring thing ever. At the very least you will want to be listening to music, and ideally you will want to set up a TV to watch while you’re putting in your time getting nowhere fast.

If you don’t have water bottles and cages on your bike, this is the time to get them, and also a good way to practice drinking from them while riding.

You will sweat buckets, and don’t want to soak your bike and the floor with it because sweat is highly corrosive in addition to being stinky, so in addition to the roughly $300 you will pay for this trainer you might as well spring for the the “Bike Thong” which Amazon also sells (with Free Super Saver Shipping) for about $22 (cheaper than CycleOps sells it for, and they don’t give you free shipping). The bike thong will protect your bike from all that corrosive sweat and it comes with a handy pocket organizer to hold your TV remote control, iPod, Clif Bars or whatever you might want handy. Trust me, attempting to cover your bike with a towel wont work nearly as well either for the bike or you as you try to keep it in place.

You should also get a fan to blow air on you as you ride your trainer.

As for a climbing block to raise your front wheel for another twenty-something dollars, I’ve been using an old sandle and that has worked just fine. The first few times riding with the sandle under the front wheel I keep turning involuntarily, but got used to it. Honestly, I feel the climbing block is a waste of money, and that for the price of the trainer it should have been included.

This trainer does come with a DVD, but I haven’t watched it yet because I don’t imagine the most beneficial and boring task of riding a trainer every day is going to be made more beneficial or interesting by having someone tell me what to do. Instead, I recommend a DVD of Breaking Away or Top Gun–so you feel like you’re flying.

Last point: if you’re really into cycling rather than simply doing this as exercise, the bike trainer will help your technique. Any amount of wiggling around, or most any bad cycling habit, it soon eliminated after being amplified by your time on the trainer. You will also hear your bike better, and notice all those squeeks and strange clicks that you couldn’t hear while riding for real (personally I feel a bike should purr).

Love it. Highly recommend it.

19July 2010: I purchased this item in mid-June, and have owned it for several weeks. I got it as a replacement for the used StairMaster PT4400 I had and loved, but it broke down on me. I paid $1200 and did not want another used one at +$4K, so I looked for other options. I never even considered a “spin” bike, because I did not know what they were! However, I wanted to keep costs under $400. One day in a Sports Chalet, I tried one—BLADEZ FITNESS JET, a solid bike. I exercised for about 5 minutes and knew the spin bike would meet my need for cardio. However, the JET was $599, over my budget.

RESEARCH: I did a LOT of research on the internet, and boy, these spin bikes have been falling like rocks! I finally found the Proform 290 SPX at a store called the Sports Authority for $299 (regularly $399). They just put one together that was not even on the floor yet, so I had to go in the back to test it. After a couple of minutes, I again saw that a spin bike would work, so I purchased it. My experience at some spin classes at 24 Hour Fitness taught me that the standard seat would be too uncomfortable, so I also purchased an old-school wide seat with jell padding, which turned out to be a good decision.

ASSEMBLY: I am NOT a mechanically inclined guy, and this thing was easy for me to put together. The only things to attach were the handlebars, peddles, and the feet, and the tools were all supplied, although I used my ratchet wrench because it was faster.

WORKING OUT: The bike is pretty stable. My weight was about 250 when I started out, and the Proform 290 SPX is rated at a max weight of 250lbs, but I know items like these have a “safety factor” and can take more weight than 250lbs. I get a great workout with this bike.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SPX 290 AND THE STAR TRAC AT 24 HOUR FITNESS: I am comparing the SPX with a more expensive bike, the STAR TRAC, because for those who are new buyers (like me) it will show one does not have to spend big money to get an effective spin bike.
The Startrek is an outstanding bike made for commercial use. The big difference is the Startrek has more resolution in changing resistance; in other words, it takes more turns to vary the resistance. On the Proform 290 SPX, as I turn the knob where I can feel resistance, I only have about a half turn to get to the maximum resistance, and I cannot turn the knob anymore. However, this is not a problem. The main point is that the user knows the “sweet spots” of resistance settings for the bike.

Once I get going, I only turn the resistance knob in one quarter to eighth inch increments throughout the entire exercise, and I easily maintain 77-81% of my heart rate. Other differences between these two bikes is the because the Star Trac is a commercial bike, it will take a 350lb person, and the cabling on the Star Trac is covered by the frame, so getting sweat on the cables and fasteners is greatly minimized. I overcame this by putting clear RTV over the screws and foot pedals (not the handlebar) and I put a hole in a small towel and put it over the resistance knob to keep my sweat off the break cabling. This is important, for water and salt from sweating will eventually corrode the fittings. On a final note, the STAR TRAC SPINNER PRO is about $1000 compared to the price of $299 I paid.

SETTING THE PACE: I have seen reviews on these bikes where people say it should have a computer. Well, that’s fine, but this will add to the price. All I use is a clock, the countdown timer from my watch, and a heart-rate monitor (the most important tool). The clock I use to track my workout time. I have the countdown timer on my watch set to repeat every 90 seconds. Moreover, the heat-rate monitor I use to pace myself.

THE FIRST TEN MINUTES, I go in 90 second intervals, alternating between sitting and standing, increasing the resistance in eight-inch increments.

THE REST OF THE EXERCICE, I go in 10 minute stretches. I maintain an even pace at 70-75% of my heart rate. At the end of the 10 minutes, I do another interval standing up and pedaling (also known as a standing hill climb) for 90 seconds with more resistance and get my heart rate up to +85%, then level back down to 72-75%.

Thus, in a 45-50 minute routine, I start with a 7-10 minute segment of intervals increasing the resistance to get my heart rate going. After that, I do 2-3 segments of 10-minutes each at a constant pace, and end each of these segment with a 90 second standing hill climb. The final two minutes I wind it down.

MINOR ISSUE: The only thing about this bike (not enough to rate it lower), is that there is a high-pitched “hum” I get from the flywheel, but it disappears after after about half-way through the exercise while I maintain an even pace. The “hum” has no effect on the flywheel operation or resistance settings.

TRAINING: It benefited me to go to spin classes at 24-hour fitness to learn how to setup and ride the bike. They offer a week free trail, so it is a great low-cost way to learn. In addition, YOUTUBE has some great videos on how to ride spin bikes. Just type in “spin bike setup,” and a bunch of videos will pop up.

GOOD ON THE KNEES: Although I loved my StairMaster PT4400, there were many times my knees felt a bit weak, but never enough to force me to stop using it. However, there is NO issue with the knees on the SPX 290. At my age (51), this means a lot!

CONCLUSION: This review was long because I know there are people out there seeking information. I have benefited greatly from the many reviews on various products, and wanted to get my “two-cents” in. This bike is a great buy, and one does not have to spend +$800 for the high-end bikes to get a good workout.

Garming FR60 GPS Not Really.. HRM Yes Sir.

I Purchased the Garmin FR60 Bundle W/ Foot pod to Help me learn run pacing and for Triathlon Training. My old HRM just gave up but the chest strap works still works with most of the equipment at the gym without the watch. But there is no need since I have the FR60 but there are some “Issues” to deal with first. The Look and function is very good. However since I’m new to Garmin the menu’s took a little getting used to and programing was a little bit difficult, but from what I’ve heard this is typical. Once you do get the menus down it’s very intuitive and similar to other models they offer. The other reason I picked the Garmin unit is the Manufactures of other HRM’s in this price range had non replaceable batteries. IE you had to send them back to the factory to be replaced. This is something I really wasn’t fond of since I use mine daily. This unit fits nicely on the wrist and can be used as a “Sport Watch” and no-one would know you a Workoutaholic if they didn’t know you.

Packaged in the box were the Owners manual and Watch, Foot-pod, HRM-Strap, USB Ant+ stick. There is no software to speak of since it’s self loading on the Ant+ Stick. You also need to set up an account with Garmin to download your data and analyze it. BEWARE: Firmware Updates will erase your data and settings on the watch and they need to be set back up!!! There is no Off-line option to review your data . This means you upload your data to Garmin then re-download it in Excel or TCX format then upload it into a training website like Training Peaks(Online) or Sport Tracs(Stand Alone Runs Offline). Granted it takes only a few minutes to do but is a little bit of a pain. Also when uploading you have the option to leave the data on your watch for you to review or when the download is completed the workout date is erased. It takes a little bit of faith to let your data go. When setting up your account you can set up your Heart Rate zones based on age and resting Heart Rate. You can add as many zones as you see fit. For Simplicity I just use 5, now when you look at your data though the amount of time in each zone is not displayed on the website on your HR Graph. The graph look really good but the only data given is Avg HR, Max HR. It would be nice if the time in each Zone was given as well. My old HRM(Which was $40) displayed these with times and % in zones on the watch and didn’t need to upload the data. Other data that is Give is Workout Time, Avg Speed/Pace, Max Speed/Pace, Avg Cadence, Max Cadence. All good Data that is essential for training/racing purposes.

For Running the Foot Pod Sensor tracks steps, pacing and speed very accurately out of the box. Pick a spot on your shoes to mount the sensor and pair the device with your FR60, I did a test run at the track and it was spot on after a 1 mile test run. You can either adjust the stride length automatically or manual adjust. There are supposed to be shoe on the market that the Foot-pod will mound directly into the sole under the shoe insert. I believe Nike makes one. Mounting in the laces are just fine for me. The advantage the FR60 has is It can be used indoors without a GPS signal. The combination of the Foot-Pod and HRM gives you very accurate Calorie data when running of a treadmill. I have found that most treadmills are off speed wise to the FR60, for example I warm-up at 10:00 indicated pace on the treadmill and my FR60 shows anywhere from a 9:20-9:35. No a big deal since I’m logging the information for later retrieval.

Since I Cycle I use the GSC-10 Speed and Cadence Sensor for my Bicycle. Same setup as the Foot-Pod with regard to pairing. This can be used indoors as well during winter months on Stationary Fluid Trainer or Rollers to track speed and distance. The downside is NO FREAKING Odometer!!!!!!! what was Garmin Thinking. You get everything else, Distance, Current Speed, Calories, Avg/Max Speed, Avg/Max Cadence, Time, Lap/Distance/Time/AvgSpeed/MaxSpeed/LapCalories, blah blah blah… I had to add my old Speed sensor back to the front wheel to capture Overall ODO distance.

Functionality: The FR60 is pretty easy to set up once you figure out the page layout and logic. You get your data input(AGE, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, ACTIVITY Class(read the manual for this one) into the devise under SETTINGS/USER. After pairing your footpod and Speed/Cadence sensor, You can then set up your “TRAINING PAGES” This is where the FR60 really shines. You can take all the data collected from either your Run/Bike/Other and display up to 3 pieces of data on the screen and have 5 pages to display the data. You can have one screen for Time only and another for Distance and Pace then another for Heart Rate, HR Zone, Calories and so one. If only One line of info is displayed it fits almost the entire screen and gets smaller from there. the Dot Matrix LCD Screen is fairly easy to read at a glace either running or biking.

The FR60, HR Chest Sensor, Foot-pod are all waterproof to 3 Meters so they can be worn during the swim portion of Triathlons or during off road runs that cross creeks or during Steeplechase events. I’ve worn mine during the swim of a sprint Triathlon. For Triathlon the F60 is not Tri Friendly meaning you cannot change sports easy. I just set it up in Other and Just Press Lap during transitions in and out. Since I’m only concerned with overall time and HR. The FR60 can be set up to scan for Pods so it will pick up either sensor when you press the lap button during T1 or T2. If your set on sport specific Timing press and hold the MODE button and you can then change sports.

This elliptical trainer was another surprise for us (when you compare with other people’s experiences). When we ordered it we were told it will take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive. The surprise: one week, good packaging again, nothing missing inside, no problem putting it together.
It works the way was meant to work. Good for average exercisers and has a seat to be used as a bicycle. Listed on Amazon for a max of 220 lbs weight for a person, but the manual lists it for 250 lbs max, which is good for me. It is a good construction, no noise, no wobbling.

Just got it and I love it!

This is totally worth buying! The quality is very good and it’s easy to put together. I put it together mostly by myself and I’m a 21yr old female with average strength and it wasn’t too hard. I did have trouble tightening a couple of bolts, but that was the hardest part, and mostly just because of the position of the bolt. Most of the pieces are together already, the pieces that need greasing were already greased. It comes with the tools you need to put it together, and the hardware is separated into what you need for each step, so there’s no digging around looking for the right part.

As far as the elliptical itself, it’s awesome.
*It has an audio input jack and comes with a cord for it, and you can either listen to music on its speakers or plug your headphones into the elliptical itself.
*There’s a spot were you can set your ipod or mp3 player and it also has a little book stand at the bottom of the console display.
*There’s a water bottle holder and it has two smaller side holders where you can set other things like a cell phone or something, which is nice.
*It has a power cord, it doesn’t take batteries like some do.
*It has a fan that has 3 different settings and an option for changing what you’re looking at on the screen, calories burned or distance and time or heart rate. It has a spot that tells you your rate in MPH and also your resistance setting.
*It measures the distance in miles and starts at 0.00 goes up by .01 miles at a time.
*It has some preset programs, but I haven’t used them, I’ve just done it as manual.
*It has 2 options for changing the resistance level: it has + and – buttons, but it also has numbers 1-10 on the sides so you can change resistance quickly.
*It has a really smooth motion, you don’t feel like you’re bouncing that much when you run on it and it’s super quiet! It’s not wobbly and feels really stable and sturdy. The foot pad is pretty big too, which is nice because you have room to find which spot is most comfortable.

The only thing I don’t love about it is that when you start using it, it beeps pretty loudly. It also beeps when it’s shutting off, and I think when you press the buttons. It’s not a big problem, but it can get annoying when you’re trying to be quiet.

I think that about sums it up, and if I come across any problems, I’ll update this later.

Big fun for little people.

So the kid announces that she wants a blue bike. The Kettler trike is apparently no longer cutting it and she wants a “big girl bike.” She’s only three so I look at my options and while the Skuut is what everyone around here seems to have, I needed blue and thus purchased a Kazam bike.

In short, she loves it. It was easy to assemble and she learned to ride it in a matter of weeks. She has gone from basically walking on top of it, to learning to coast down the hills over the course of the summer.

My favorite things about the Kazam?
1. It’s light. I can hook it to the handlebar of my stroller on the way home from the park when little legs are too tired to ride it home at the end of the day.
2. The seat is easily adjustable without tools. The kid is constantly growing and it’s great to be able to just pull the seat up another inch when I see that she needs it.
3. Awesome customer service. Our front tire kept losing air. An email to Kazam customer service saw a new one on our doorstep in days. Plus the tool to fix it with. Plus stickers (a big deal if you are three).
4. It’s blue. Really blue. Which makes the kid very happy. Just add a bell, helmet, a little bike bling and you are good to go!

P.S. My daughter is a tall three year old (90th percentile) and I think we will be able to use this bike for at least another year or two.

Amazing Picture

Recieved this TV on April 26 directly from Samsung as a Replacement to a four year old DLP 3D 50″ HLT series TV I had when it came out in 2007, all I had to do was caugh up $300 out of pocket, this TV is Great with both HiDef and Great with Standard def which cant be said of all HDTV’s, I was comparing at J&R it to the 2011 Panansonics and this year I believe the 2011 Samsungs Plasma’s blows the Pannys in their class out of the water!! The colors and the blacks just pop! I have a 7.1 surround system but this TV has pretty decent built in speakers much better than my old TV, I have not tried the 3D yet since I do not have the 3D glasses not sure if I will even buy them in the future. its a beautiful looking TV in terms of the thick All Glass Stand and the 51″ slim Bezel at the J&R store I can barely tell the diff between this 720p set and the more Expensive 1080p version.
